Allergies can wreak havoc on your Spring, but the right nutrients can make all the difference.
Nothing takes the wind out of your sails like seasonal allergies… you’re not sick, but you feel sick. Ugh, no thank you! Also known as hay fever* and allergic rhinitis, the condition arises when proteins on pollens trigger our body’s immune system to create an inflammatory cascade. For most people, it causes symptoms such as sneezing, sore throat, runny nose, watery or itchy eyes, and fatigue. However, in people with existing respiratory or immune issues, it can have serious consequences.
Seasonal allergies are most common when grasses, trees, and weeds are pollinating (the Bay Area’s beloved wind doesn’t help either). According to the Mayo Clinic, an estimated 30 percent of adults are affected. That number seems significantly lower than expected given the recent conversations happening at our Happy Hours and Lounges (and OH on the streets). #YouAreNotAlone
While it may be tempting to grab a boatload of antihistamines and nasal decongestants at the drugstore, these medications only provide temporary relief from symptoms and can cause unpleasant side effects, such as drowsiness or dry mucous membranes. Instead, focus on strengthening the immune system and removing toxins that add stress to the body.
Histamine, produced during an allergic reaction, causes the symptoms of allergies by stimulating the inflammatory response of the immune system. By introducing the right nutrients to the body, this response may be lessened and the severity of symptoms decreased.
B5 (Dexpanthenol)
One of the many benefits of vitamin B5 is that it helps to support adrenal function. Adrenal glands produce hormones that help regulate metabolism, immune defenses, blood pressure, response to stress, and other essential functions. MIC
MIC is a combination of three nutrients – Methionine, Inositol, and Choline. While it is best known for its fat metabolizing benefits, MIC can help alleviate allergies too.
Methionine is an essential amino acid responsible for numerous metabolic actions in the body, including reducing histamine, thereby lowering allergy symptoms.
Inositol has been known to have a calming effect on the nervous system, which can help reduce stress and anxiety. Research has shown that high levels of stress can worsen existing allergies, possibly by upsetting the balance of substances in your body that control immune response. (Only available via injection)
Vitamin D
Also known as “the sunshine vitamin”, vitamin D is produced in the body when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. Our genes are directly influenced by vitamin D and a proper immune response simply cannot occur without it. Therefore, a lack of vitamin D will result in uncontrolled inflammation. Note: Unlike B vitamins & vitamin C, vitamin D is fat-soluble, meaning it is possible to get too much. The National Institute of Health recommends maintaining a level of ≥50 nmol/L (≥20 ng/mL) for adults. Get your level checked before beginning vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)
This water-soluble “wonder” vitamin promotes healing, works as an antioxidant, supports immune functioning, and also acts as a natural antihistamine. Studies show that vitamin C depletion is associated with increased histamine levels, and that supplementing with vitamin C lowers histamine levels. (Only available via I.V.)
Zinc
Zinc supports healthy immune functioning and reduces inflammation, along with a host of other benefits. In fact, a 2011 analysis of 62 studies concluded that deficiencies in a number of nutrients, including zinc, were associated in a higher occurrence of asthma and allergies. (Only available via I.V.)
Glutathione
If you’re having déjà vu, it’s because I’ve gushed over glutathione before. Found naturally in the body as a product of the liver, glutathione is a master antioxidant that affects every system in the body, especially the immune system and lungs.
