How to Prepare for an IV

IV therapy is an ideal way to hydrate, replenish nutrients, and boost wellness—but nothing throws off the experience like needing multiple attempts to find a vein. We want you to have nothing less than an amazing experience at B12 LOVE, so here are a few simple steps to follow beforehand to help ensure a smooth, one-stick IV placement.

1. Hydrate as Much as You Can

While we know many of you are seeking IV drip therapy for the benefit of hydration, staying hydrated is the single most important thing you can do to prepare for an IV. When your body is well-hydrated, your veins are plumper, more visible, and easier to access.

How to Hydrate Properly:

Start early. Drinking a big glass of water right before your IV isn’t enough—your hydration levels are built over time. Aim to drink consistently for at least 24 hours before your appointment.

Follow the half-body-weight rule. An ideal goal is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily. (For example, if you weigh 150 lbs, aim for 75 oz of water.)

Limit caffeine and alcohol. Both act as diuretics, meaning they pull water from your system. If possible, reduce coffee and alcohol intake the day before your IV.

Consider electrolytes. Water alone isn’t always enough—adding electrolytes (like those found in coconut water or electrolyte powders) can help keep your hydration balanced.

2. Warm Up Your Veins

Cold weather, air-conditioned spaces, or even just sitting still for long periods can cause veins to constrict, making them harder to access. Keeping your veins warm helps them expand, making them more visible and easier to stick.

Wear warm clothing. If you’re coming from a chilly environment, bring a sweater or jacket. We recommend something you can remove and to wear short sleeves so your practitioner can access your arms easily.

Move around. A short walk or some light stretching before your appointment can improve circulation and bring veins closer to the surface. We LOVE taking walks around our lounges to get blood moving.

Apply warmth. At B12 LOVE, we’ll supply you with a heating pad before and during your treatment for comfort.

3. Eat a Small Meal

Going into an IV session on an empty stomach can lead to dizziness, nausea, or a sudden drop in blood sugar. A small, balanced meal before your appointment can help you feel steady and make the process more comfortable. We suggest eating something protein rich with healthy fats and complex carbohydrates.

4. Relax & Breathe

Stress and anxiety can cause veins to constrict, making IV placement more difficult. If you tend to feel nervous about needles, using relaxation techniques can help your veins stay open and make the experience smoother. Practice deep breathing or use distraction techniques like watching the televisions in our lounges, and always remember that at B12 LOVE, you’re in good hands. All of our IV providers are licensed, highly-trained medical providers.

A smooth IV experience starts with preparation. By hydrating properly, keeping warm, eating beforehand, and staying relaxed, you’ll give your nurse, nurse practitioner, or doctor the best chance of finding a great vein on the first try.
